The necessary steps for having a home based business online
A home based business, like any other business, requires 2 basic things - a product (or service) and a marketing strategy. Don't get confused, you must have these 2 things, but you don't need anything else unless you choose to. A business with no product (or service) is illegal and a business with no marketing strategy will make you no money.
Therefore, the process of starting your home business online is simple:

You should choose a product (or service) or produce one;

You should choose a marketing strategy;
|

3.

You should apply the marketing strategy in order to market your product.

The product - The thing most people come to search for in the internet is information. Therefore you can use any expertise you have and make it into an information product - you can write an e-book, make a presentation or video lessons - use any technique that will make it easier for you to produce a useful, attractive product and market it. If you don't have any expertise or if you don't know how to turn it into a good product, you can always hire someone to do it for you, or you can have plenty of ready made products that you can use for your business.
There are 3 types of ready made products that you can market:

Products that you promote as an affiliate and get a commission for every product you sell. |

Products with resell rights (RR) or master resell rights (MRR) - these are products that you buy with the rights to resell them and take all the profit for yourself, but you have to sell them as they are and you cannot change them.

3.

Products with private label rights (PLR) - these products you can present as yours, you can use them almost in anyway you like and change them in any way you like (always check if there are any limiting terms you should take notice of).

Choosing any product you should see that the product is highly in demand and that it delivers what it promises. Then if you choose a product just to promote as an affiliate you should see that your commission is at least 25% of the price, otherwise it doesn't worth the promotion efforts. If you want a product with MRR or PLR they're more expensive (especially PLR products) so see that they're not too expensive for you, and that their minimum price for selling (often a minimum price for selling is one of the limitation on MRR or PLR products) is not too expensive for your customers.
Marketing strategies - first of all it is important that you understand that before you can successfully market anything, you should learn the basics of marketing and marketing psychology, as well as develop skills at persuasive writing. Of course you can hire someone to do that for you, but paying a good writer may cost you more than you would like to spend. I know that hardly anyone tells you that, because it doesn't sound good, it doesn't sound like an instant success and no one wants to discourage you. Well, neither do I, but if you are not intended on learning some basic marketing skills you will not make the kind of money you hope, and you may end up spending a lot beyond what you intended.
There are many marketing strategies, and I will probably dedicate a whole page just for them, but just to mention a few - there are strategies that focus on search engine optimization (SEO) - that means using keywords in the titles of your web pages and your web pages content, getting links to your website from other related websites (there are different ways to do it), writing articles and blogging. You can also offer a free product or service in exchange to providing an email address, and in this way create or increase your mailing list of targeted leads that you can follow up and turn into loyal customers.
As you see it does require some research work and some investment, but it is relatively simple. You don't need to quit your job or anything, actually in the beginning it's better to keep it so that you don't feel under pressure and so that you can have the money you need to invest while you're trying to find the marketing strategy which is good for you. Quit your job only when your own home based business online makes at least as much money as you do with your job.

Why most internet Marketers fail, and how to avoid the pitfalls
One of the main reasons to internet marketing failure is misleading information, and our readiness to be misled. Now what I mean by that? Well, Sometimes we want so desperately to change our present situation, that we will pay anything we can to someone who promises us just that. We would like to believe that here comes the great opportunity of our lives. That's what all the cheaters know - our readiness (or even willingness) to be cheated. Well, none of those who promise instant success while doing nothing will actually deliver. They are only selling dreams, because we pay more readily for a dream than for reality.
What happen often is that people buy one dream after another, expecting a miracle to happen and later on, when they wake up, they find themselves penniless, feeling cheated and stupid, and the way from there to giving up the idea of home based business online, is very short. At that point they say that home based business online doesn't work. But why do we expect a business online to work without putting some of our time and money, while it is clear that if we wanted a brick and mortar business we would have to put into it a lot of time and money (much more than in internet business)? Somehow we expect the Internet to do miracles for us, and we lose our patience and determination when it doesn't happen on our schedule.
Please don't misunderstand me; I'm not against business opportunities, I'm against the attitude that a business opportunity will do for you the job while you are counting your profits. A business opportunity can work, but you should make it work. Even the type of businesses that are meant to produce residual income need to be started. Just like when a person has an apartment to hire. It provides a residual income, but he should find someone to hire it, or pay someone else to do that job for him. The apartment will not do it by itself.
Now you may say: "I did invest some money and time, but it still didn't work" and here comes the next cause for failure - how did you invest you money and time?
Regarding spending money - if you invest your money in buying loads of internet marketing information e-books that will keep you busy reading for the next 5 years, then you're wasting your money (and the next 5 years, if you'll bother to read them all). If you invest your money in one of the "dreams" mentioned above, that's another waste of money.
I don't say that you shouldn't buy books about internet marketing, rather I think you should get useful information, but choose it carefully. Read those things that you're going to apply immediately. Don't read a book about blog marketing, when you're not even sure what product you would like to market, or a book about traffic to your website, while you don't have one yet. Then, before diving into the next book, and the next, and the next - apply what you have just read. It's so easy to lose yourself in the overload of information everywhere in the internet; you can easily spend hours and hours thinking that you're working for your business while actually you're doing something between very little and nothing. I would recommend setting aside some time in a week (maybe 2-3 hours, or a little more in the very beginning) for reading information, and the rest of the time dedicate to applying what you've learned.
Now, you may experience some failures when you try things. Think of them as learning experiences. Don't learn that internet business doesn't work - learn what doesn't work for internet business, or for marketing a specific product. I don't know of any internet marketing guru who didn't learn by making some mistakes, and they're not even afraid to admit it. What makes you think that you will make no mistakes? But know that making mistakes doesn't mean you cannot succeed. Turn your failures into the pillars of your success.
Now, as I wrote before, sometimes we may get so desperate to change our situation that we may pay anything for a useless dream. It is alright to want desperately to change one's life. Use desperation to increase your determination to do what it takes to bring about that desired change. Never give up your dreams.
